You already own a serious watch. Maybe it's a Royal Oak, maybe an independent, and now you want a Patek. A serious Patek collection starts at the 5167A Aquanaut, and the dealer you choose should be able to sell you one, buy the watch you're moving on, and find the reference that comes after it.

The 5167A Aquanaut: where a serious Patek collection starts

The 5167A is the steel Aquanaut, and it's the reference most collectors use to get into Patek. It wears like a sport watch and is easy to live with. It also trades well later, because the next buyer knows exactly what it is.

That last point matters more than the first. Most collectors don't stop at one Patek. The 5167A gets you in, and when you move up to a gold Aquanaut, a travel time or a World Time, a clean steel Aquanaut is a strong watch to trade toward it.

Start with the watch the market already understands, and the next move gets easier.

Dealer or boutique: when each is the move

An authorized Patek Philippe boutique sells new pieces from the current collection, and you buy on the brand's terms. If you want a specific new reference and you're prepared to build a relationship with the boutique, that's the route.

A secondary dealer covers everything else:

  • You want the watch now. A dealer sells from inventory that already exists.

  • You want a reference the brand no longer makes, or a specific year or dial. A dealer can buy it from whoever owns it.

  • You're selling or trading. A boutique sells you a watch. A dealer can also buy one from you, or take yours toward the next.

  • You want one counterpart for all of it. The same desk prices your trade, quotes the watch you want and handles delivery.

If all you want is a new piece at retail and you're happy to wait, the boutique is the answer. If you're building a collection, you'll end up working with a dealer.

Sell your Patek outright

Sometimes you aren't trading. You're selling. A dealer can buy the watch outright, and the conversation starts with the reference, year, condition and what comes with it: box, papers, extra links, service history.

Have that ready and you'll get a straight answer faster. The sell page takes the details.

Trade your watch toward the next Patek

Most collectors move up by trading in. The watch on your wrist is part of how you pay for the next one, so it should be priced as seriously as the watch you're buying.

A first week, worked through

Say you own an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and want a 5167A.

  1. Day one. You send the reference, year, condition and full set details for the Royal Oak, and say you want a 5167A.

  2. Next. The dealer quotes your Royal Oak as a trade and quotes the 5167A, from inventory if it's there or from the dealer network if it isn't.

  3. Then. You see one number: the 5167A less your trade. If it works, you agree terms.

  4. To close the week. Your Royal Oak ships out, the 5167A ships in, and both are insured in transit with the paperwork done.

Two years later the same thing runs again, with the 5167A as the trade and a 5167R or a 5164A as the target.

If it isn't in stock, it gets found

Inventory is only part of it. If the reference you want exists and someone is selling it, the job is to find it through the dealer network. That includes the harder Patek references, specific years and specific dials. You can open a search for a particular watch on the sourcing page.

If you're timing a purchase around retail pricing, our Journal covers Patek's 2026 US price cut and April increase.

Offer to delivery

Agreeing a price is half the deal. After that come terms, shipping, insurance while the watch is in transit, and the paperwork for the sale or the trade. All of it should be handled for you, not passed back to you. The shipping details cover how watches move.

Inspection and service

A Patek bought on the secondary market should arrive in the condition it was sold as. Inspection and service are handled through independent watchmakers and through the brands themselves, so a watch that needs attention gets it from someone qualified to work on it.
